John Richard Anderson, 92 of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Shamokin, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.
Born on April 22, 1926, in Shamokin, he was the son of the late William Fox Anderson and Ruth Esther Shroyer Anderson.
John retired as a salesman from the former Raub Supply Company; and had worked for Westinghouse Appliances and Gable’s Appliances. He was also a private pilot having graduated from Aviation Engineering School in Williamsport and flying his first solo flight in 1946. John proudly served his country with the U. S. Air Force in World War II as a B-24 Bomber Tail Gunner.
He was a former member of Salem United Church of Christ, Harrisburg, and attended the Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, Harrisburg. Flying was John’s passion as he was a Golden Member of the Silver Wings Society and member of the Aluminum Overcast Flying Fortress.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Pearl Gertrude Thomas Anderson, whom he married on October 15, 1949; two sons, Lon J. Anderson husband of Kaye W. of Chambers Hill, and Terry L. Anderson fiancé of Linda G. Kerin of Owings Mills, MD; one daughter Jennifer L. Ward wife of Larry K. of Mechanicsburg; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, George W. Anderson.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 11:30 AM in Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, 6300 Chambers Hill Road, Harrisburg, with The Rev. Nicholas E. Keeney officiating. Interment will be in the Chambers Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be Wednesday from 10:30 AM until time of service in the church.
