Elma Higbee (Wilson)
Elma Jean Wilson Higbee, 87, of Hummelstown, went home to Jesus on Friday, May 25, 2018.
Born in Philadelphia on January 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Robert P. and Edna Francis Wilson.
Elma Jean was a teacher and substitute teacher at various schools including Lynnwood Elementary, Haverford Township, Derry Township, Lower Dauphin, Town & Country Day School, as well as in State College. She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1949, received a bachelor’s degree from the State Teachers College at West Chester in 1952, and a Master’s of Education from Penn State University in 1956.
Elma Jean was a loyal friend and a faithful caregiver. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown, attending the Wednesday morning Bible study, Share Group, Blessings of Friendship Class, History of Church Class and United Methodist Women functions. She sang in the church choir for over 50 years. When she was unable to attend worship services, she made sure to listen to the radio broadcast. A true people person, Elma Jean could often be found at the Hershey Mohler Senior Center, eating out with her friends or playing Scrabble; she was also a member of the former Hummelstown Golden Age Club. Elma Jean was an avid reader and loved to sing. For the past year, as a resident of the Middletown Home, she enjoyed the warmth of the staff and participated in many activities, with Bingo and Bible study as two of her favorites.
In addition to her parents, Elma Jean was preceded in death by her husband, G. Allen Higbee, in October 2001.
She is survived by a son, Robert W. Higbee husband of Ruth Welliver Higbee of Susquehanna Township; a daughter, Lois J. Craven wife of Clarence L. of Elizabethtown; and two granddaughters, Ellen C. Higbee and Sarah E. Higbee.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 1, 2018, at 11 AM in Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Robert P. Stokes, officiating. A visitation will be held in the church on Friday from 10 AM until the time of the service. A private inurnment will be held in the Hummelstown Cemetery.
