Obituary

Obituary for Kathleen J. Meyer (Lewis)

Kathleen Jean (Lewis) Meyer peacefully passed away in her home in Rural Hummelstown, PA, on March 9, 2019. Her husband and son Kent by her side. She had been suffering from small cell lung cancer for 3 years.

Kathy was born March 19, 1942, on the family farm near Fontanelle, Iowa, to Albert and Marjorie (Heiser) Lewis. She grew up on the farm and went to a small country school through eighth grade, then graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School in 1960. After high school, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, becoming a secretary in the Financial Section of the Iowa Air National Guard at Des Moines Airport, where she met her husband, George. They were married on May 31, 1969, in Des Moines. The couple moved to Pennsylvania in May, 1970, when George was transferred to the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Kathy, pregnant with their first child, busily prepared their new home by herself for several months while George was overseas on a mission. Their first son, Reed, was born in 1971, and twin sons, Kent and Kirby, followed in 1975. Kathy graduated from Harrisburg Area Community College with an Associate degree in Communications and the Arts in 1974, as well as, a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Arts in 1994. Kathy was employed for 21 years as a Registered Nurse at Polyclinic Medical Center in Harrisburg, PA, and later at extended care facilities in the Harrisburg area, before retiring in 2007.

In her spare time, Kathy loved cooking and baking, gardening, knitting, and reading. She was also active in the Red Hat Society.

Kathy is survived by her husband, George; her son, Reed, his wife, Susan, and their son, Penn, in Weesp, The Netherlands; her son, Kent, in Hummelstown, PA; her son, Kirby, in Chandler, AZ; her brother, Larry (Peggy) Lewis, in Fontanelle, Iowa; her sister, Iris (Dale) Evans, in Bridgewater, Iowa; and her nieces, Laura, Wanda, Lori, and Nicole.

In respect to Kathy’s wishes the family will spend private time memorializing her.
